I’m surprised the Fed hasn’t stepped in and placed limits on horsepower offerings. The numbers are insane. 700hp? Even a V6 Impala has 300 horsepower.

The dodge is kinda cheating, the 840 is on race gas and an ecu flash. Though the Demons tune is
supported by the
factory, the vette is capable of more with a tune and race fuel. The De
mon is something like 810 on pump gas.

Doubtful, I could have taken a test and then go out and bought a H ayabusa without ever touching a bike.
ALso those are low selling, and auto manufacturers could just classify it differently to get around any legislation

I think the Mirage has something like 78 hp. The Prius C had a combined gas+electric output of 99 hp but I think it got killed off a year or two ago.

The ecu tune and everything else needed for full power is a $1 option when you buy a Demon. I’m pretty sure they include a can of race gas too.

Oh I agree, we’re just not comparing apples to apples. The Demon isn’t street legal at 840 hp and with similar tunes to a vette, it
can make similar numbers.

I’m Mr. Big Government here, but I don’t think they should be banning them. I do think it might be appropriate to require a special endorsement for cars over 300HP or so. That would have to be a state by state thing (though I’d prefer if you could get a federal license, if only for the greater convenience of portability).

The difference is that you can buy a Demon tuned to make 840hp from your dealer with a warranty. To make 840 from a Vette you have to take it to a tuner, throw parts at it, and ditch your warranty. The point is Dodge sells an 840hp car at their dealers, Chevy doesn’t.

I recognize this difference, thus why I said kinda. However it has always aggravated
me that dodge plasters 840hp on every advertisement
, but hardly mentions that it isn’t shipped that way, isn’t really feasible
to drive it that way nor is it street legal. If we are going to compare cars that aren’t street legal, the copo camaro makes north of 1000
hp
(they sell it at dealers too)
.

COPOs have no VIN and cannot be registered in any legal capacity. An 840 tuned Demon is only not road legal because race gas is marked as off road use only. If you really want an 840hp Demon on the street you can just pay $10+ a gallon for race gas and no one will care unless you try to pass an emissions test. Put pump gas back in it and you are completely legal again.

No, but the other end is where you run into issues. For example non-US cars with inline-3's and small diesels. Mercedes also sells a version of the AMG GT that doesn’t meet US emissions and has more HP.

I am here to say I am PSYCHED that you can still buy sub 100hp cars in North America. It’s almost a platitude here but there really is something special and fun about being able to go WOT max attack and not really be antisocial or loose your license. Maybe that’s because max sane cursing highway speed near me is like 70mph, but I love me some underpowered cars
